Tinnitus and Meniere’s Syndrome: A Natural Approach

Recently, I did a presentation for the Tinnitus and Meniere’s Syndrome support group of our local Canadian Hearing Society chapter. I wanted to share this presentation online for those who were unable to attend the meeting and for others who may be interested.

It was very eye-opening to speak to each of the individuals at the meeting that suffer from these debilitating conditions. Without having gone through it yourself it is difficult to imagine what it would be like to be in their situation – to, for example, live each day with a loud ringing sound in your head that diminishes your ability to hear properly or with vertigo so extreme it makes you anxious to even walk.

Nutrient Depletions Caused By Gastric Acid Reducers and Anti-Ulcer Drugs

We’ve explored the possible nutrient depletions associated with antibiotics. Let’s continue this look into nutrient depletions by moving on to another set of very common drugs: gastric acid reducers and anti-ulcer medications.

The following nutrients are depleted by gastric acid reducers and/or anti-ulcer drugs:

Beta-carotene Proton pump inhibitors, such as esomeprazole (Nexium®), lansoprazole (Prevacid®), omeprazole (Prilosec®, Losec®), rabeprazole (Aciphex®), and pantoprazole (Protonix®, Pantoloc®), may cause a loss of stomach acid and may reduce absorption of a single dose of beta-carotene.
